Senior Helpers helping seniors and their caregivers
- we called Senior Helpers (SH) late Friday afternoon and spoke with Joe and explained our situation. He came to St. Pete Saturday AM (the office is closed on Saturday's) to meet with my husband and myself and to listen to what we needed/wanted in a caregiver. That evening we received a call with the name of the caregiver that would be there the next day @ 9AM. - Sarah was the caregiver; she arrived before 9AM met my mother-in-law and then my husband and I spoke with her privately about what we wanted from her and what the staff at the ALF was supposed to do. She was not to take over any of the ALF's responsibilities - she was to be a companion to my MIL which also entailed seeing that she stay hydrated and eat what she could, when she wanted. She was absolutely compassionate to my mother-in-law and to us. - We stopped in daily; sometimes several times always to find Sarah interacting with my MIL or to see that she was resting. We felt my MIL was in wonderful hands with Sarah. - Sarah drove over one hour each way to care for my MIL. Always arriving with a smile and ready to assist my MIL. - Sarah worked four 12 hour shifts and then another companion was sent over, who unfortunately did not work out. - The schedule was set that Sarah would work four 12 hour days and Senior Helpers would find another companion for three 12 hour days. - Nancy was the next companion and she was wonderful. As my MIL declined she read to her, played music and spoke to her. At this point my MIL was bedridden. - Sarah was with us as my MIL was nearing the end. We were at my MIL's home every day, all day with Sarah and she not only cared for my MIL but also my husband and myself. She always asked if we needed anything, wanted to step out for a few minutes, anything she could do. When my MIL passed Sarah was by her side with my husband and I. I believe she called SH and "clocked out" but actually stayed with us for an extra hour or so to make sure we were ok, that my MIL was being taken care of by the Hospice staff, etc. - I believe we had the assistance of SH for approximately 10 days and I would highly recommend their services. Ask for Sarah or Nancy!
