NOT PROFESSIONAL.... Do not use him!!!!
From what I saw he didn't do much work on our case with the Texas Workforce Commission except file an appeal online. In fact I filed the first appeal myself! When the commission would not consider the second appeal we filed he wanted us to pay him an additional $3,000 to the $1,500 we already paid him to fight the TWC. He is all about getting money that he hasn't worked for. I asked him about processing a will for my husband and myself and he said that would also cost $1,500 during our initial meeting. I called and e-mailed his office several times regarding our case status and he never responded. My husband had to show up unannounced several times to talk to him. He NEVER followed up with us regarding our case status.
Response from Stephen J. Schechter, P.C.
I am disappointed that one of our clients feels as if we are all about the money. Due to the Texas Rules of Discipline, I am limited to what I can say about this particular matter. However, I do want to respond generally. After checking, we did not find any emails or calls that went unanswered. Because of the nature of the practice of law and waiting for responses from TWC, most of our responses were: “we have nothing to report.” We understand that the waiting is frustrating, but we do not control the process. So much of what we do as attorneys is behind the scenes. I was retained to represent this client at the tail end of a TWC process. We did what we were hired to do. Unfortunately, we can never guarantee results. However, I can guarantee that if you get us, or any attorney, involved, it is always better and cheaper to do so early on. As is typical, our clients pay a retainer, based on what we estimate the cost to be. When the matter is over, we do a final bill and if we haven't spent all the retainer, we refund the unused portion. On the day this review was posted, we had met with the client to discuss his case. We discussed his options and at no time did we demand or even ask for any additional funds. It is our customary practice that we approach legal cases from both the law and the realities. If a client will spend more than they would save or receive, our advice is not to proceed. In other words, we would rather you keep your hard earn money than to pay us on a gamble. We are sorry that this client was not satisfied. We will take any and all reasonable steps to try and make it right with them. We would hope that if you need an attorney, that you will come and meet with us and make your own decision about whether we are driven by money or the desire to help our clients resolve their legal problems in the most cost effective method possible.

Mr. Stephen Schechter, my lawyer and friend is the consummate professional. He is authentically honest and will go above and beyond to get results. During my first meeting with him, Stephen picked up the phone and contacted the other attorney involved. Six business days later, my case was closed. Wow! It's his caring and can-do attitude that brought my case to a swift close. He understood the dynamics involved, and immediately knew what buttons to push. Thank you, Stephen for taking the time to work for me and my family.
